Personal Statement:

From Childhood, I have always held a deep interest in Media and my creativity and inspiration date back to my earliest memories. I developed an interest for animation in particular 3D computer generated animation after becoming fascinated by PIXAR and their incredible film productions. As I became older my passion turned towards puppetry. I started to develop my skills as a performer, seeking advice from some of the best puppeteers in the world such as Noel McNeal, Peter Linz, Phil Fletcher and Matt Vogel. These talented craftsmen have helped me to develop my skills as a puppeteer, Director and scriptwriter.

The whole Media process captivates me and I work tirelessly when developing an idea from the outset into something I feel will connect with the intended audience. Studying media over the last two years has helped me to realise my potential in creating and producing a piece of media. I have learned and developed an incredible understanding of the entire production process from pre planning and production documents which ultimately can make or break a project if not done correctly and I look forward to developing these skills and acquiring new skills at University.

I have also gained experience in camera and sound operation and directing from my own projects but also in a live production environment after gaining some experience with the college in house production company, Springboard TV.  I have also learned the importance of lighting and colour on my projects as well as the importance of audio quality which have helped me to further develop my skills of production and film making.

My project, The Man of Steel: Behind the Scenes, allowed me to explore and understand the process of making a mockumentary in the handheld camera format. My understanding of the codes and Conventions of a documentary as well as documentary troupes from my previous project Polycythemia: My Story, enabled me to improve the quality of my mockumentary and produce a more professional and polished project.

I am not afraid to go outside my comfort zone and create projects on topics/genres that I may not be entirely familiar or comfortable with. For example, my documentary Polycythemia: My Story tackled the idea of how to live with a long standing medical condition which was not only personal but also a serious factual production. I would never have previously chosen a factual project over a comedy production and I relished the opportunity to explore and develop new production techniques.

Outside of my media interests, I am a keen football fan and I play football for my local team which has helped me to develop as a team player. In August 2019, I helped organise and run a charity fun day which raised £14,000 for Clic Sargent and MPN voice two charities that have both played a big part of my life in the last 4 years. All funds raised have helped children and young people with cancer to provide support to them and their families as well as funding research for MPN Blood conditions. In December 2019, I was also the recipient of the Teenage Achievement award at the KLFM Young Hero Awards.

My ultimate ambition is to work in media. This has been my lifelong dream and with the skills and passion I have for media, I believe I am firmly on the right path to achieving this. Pre Covid, I was privileged to interview Jake Humphrey who inspired me to pursue my ambitions and gain as much hands on experience. I had secured an Easter placement with Epic Studios in Norwich which was sadly cancelled but will be rescheduled for 2021. I very much look forward developing my unique skills and creativity and to studying Media at degree level.

Dear Mr Snelson

Over the last two years, I have been studying Creative media production and Technology in TV and Film at the College of West Anglia in Kings Lynn. Developing new skills and continuing to grow my passion for media. And now my journey with the college of west Anglia is coming to an end, I am considering a place studying media at the UEA.

I have been considering a place at your wonderful University after recommendation from Jake Humphrey, back in June. Jake made me aware of your brilliant media studies course and your fantastic facilities and ever since I have been fascinated with the idea of studying media and developing my skills further. I feel strongly that the skills I already have gained in the last two years in all elements of production as well as gaining experience in live production with in house production studio Springboard TV, have given me the foundations to expand my media knowledge and skills further by studying at UEA.

My pathway into a career in media is only just begun and I hope that I can continue this further by studying at the UEA. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours Faithfully,

Conor Blake
